Emergency contraception is a tablet (pill) that can prevent pregnancy soon after sex has happened. It can be taken by a woman up to 72 hours (3 days) after sex, although it is more effective the sooner it is taken, and works best within 24 hours.
Where can I get free emergency contraception?
In Lothian all pharmacies (chemists) are able to provide free emergency contraception (Levonelle) to young people from 13 years upwards. This is available at any time during opening hours. Just ask to speak to the Pharmacist.
You can also go along to you doctor, any Family Planning Clinic, MYPAS, Caledonia Youth and some Healthy Respect drop-ins. Check the address book to find out more.
*Exceptions include all Tesco pharmacies
Had unprotected sex over 3 days ago, but within the past 5 days?
If it is over 72 hours (3 days) since you had unprotected sex, but within 5 days, contact the Family Planning Clinic at Dean Terrace where they can discuss the option of getting Ellaone* or having a ‘coil’ put in for you to prevent pregnancy.
* Ellaone is a new emergency contraceptive pill that can be used to prevent pregnancy up to 120 hours (5 days) after unprotected intercourse or contraceptive failure. If you are between 72 hours and 120 hours since unprotected sex having a ‘coil’ fitted in your womb is still the best option. If you do not want to have a coil fitted then you should consider getting Ellaone instead. Currently it is only available at the Family Planning Service at the central clinic based at Dean Terrace.
Had unprotected sex over 5 days ago, or more than once?
If you had unprotected sex, you could be at risk of pregnancy. If you are feeling anxious, go along and talk to someone. See the address book for more details or visit the ‘What about Pregnancy’ page.
