What Is Emergency Contraception?
Emergency contraception is a tablet (pill) that can prevent pregnancy soon after sex has happened. It can be taken by a woman up to 72 hours after sex, although it is more effective the sooner it is taken, and works best within 24 hours.
Where can I get free emergency contraception?
In Lothian, the EC72 pharmacy service is a group of local pharmacies (chemists) that provide free emergency contraception (EC72) to young people aged 14-25 years. Please just ask to speak to the Pharmacist. It is also important to check when the Pharmacist is able to provide the emergency contraception by either calling the pharmacy before your visit or by checking with the Pharmacist directly at the time of your visit.
You can also go along to you doctor, any Family Planning Clinic, MYPAS, Caledonia Youth and some Healthy Respect drop-ins. Check the address book to find out more.
Had unprotected sex over 3 days ago, but within the past 5 days?
If it is over 72 hours since you had unprotected sex, but within 5 days, contact the Family Planning Clinic at Dean Terrace where they can discuss the option of having a ‘coil’ put in for you to prevent pregnancy. This is very effective.
Had unprotected sex over 5 days ago, or more than once?
If you had unprotected sex, you could be at risk of pregnancy. If you are feeling anxious, go along and talk to someone. See the address book for more details or visit the ‘What about Pregnancy’ page.
