It’s important to find out what you both want, and to feel that there’s trust and respect.Talking about sex, sexual health and all the stuff going on in your relationships isn’t always easy. If you’re feeling worried, stressed or pressurised, these things can have an effect on your health, including your emotional (or mental) health. Talking with someone can help you work things out and feel a bit better.
Talking to a friend
When it comes to sex and relationships, having someone to talk to can make all the difference. This might mean your best mate, but not everyone is lucky enough to have a friend that close.
Talking to your partner
If you’re in a relationship, it’s great if you can talk about these things to your partner. In fact, this is probably a sign that you have a pretty good relationship! It’s important to find out what you both want, and to feel that there’s trust and respect. But this can take time. If your relationship is sexual, it is important to talk about keeping safe – like about what you are going to use to prevent infections and unintended pregnancy.
Talking to your family
Some people can talk to someone in their family: their parents, or a big brother or sister, aunt or uncle. Others feel like this would never happen. But you might be surprised. It really depends on your family, and every family is different.
Talking to a professional
There are lots of places especially for young people where you can go to talk to someone, or phone up, about what’s bothering you, whatever it is. They are there to help and even if you are under 16, you have a right to confidentiality. If you need help now, try one of the helplines shown in related services, or visit one of the drop-ins in the address book. There is also a useful website which lists local counsellors who you may wish to speak to, visit http://www.counselling-directory.org.uk
