It’s really important that you know what rights you have when it comes to sex and relationships, so that you know where you stand and can get all the information you need. Just as important are your responsibilities, because when you have sex, you are involving someone else, and they have rights just the same as you!

All young people in Scotland have the right to:

  • be healthy and safe
  • be treated with respect
  • to ask for what you want in a relationship
  • to say no to sexual activity until you feel ready
  • be able to get good quality information about sexual health and relationships
  • confidentiality and respect for your privacy
  • use sexual health services (like your doctor, a sexual health clinic or drop-in)
  • get medical treatment (for example, contraception)
  • have your say when a professional person’s decision affects you.

And the responsibilities that go alongside your rights are:

  • to think carefully about keeping you and your partner healthy and safe
  • to think about the information you get about sexual health and relationships
  • to say clearly what you want and don’t want in a relationship
  • to treat other people, and their feelings, with respect (even if they are different from you)
  • to think about what the law says about sex and relationships.
