What is rape and sexual assault?
Sexual assault is any unwanted sexual activity or sexual touching.
Unwanted sexual activity means you did not give your consent.
Sexual assault and rape are never your fault.
Speak to a trusted adult if this has happened to you.
Sexual assault and rape can happen within relationships.

It is never okay for sexual activity to happen without your consent.
The law says you must be 16 or older to consent to sexual activity.
You cannot consent to sexual activity with a support worker, teacher, or carer.
The law says they are ‘in a position of trust’, so they are not allowed to have sex with you.

They can check for pregnancy if you are a girl or woman.
Sexual assault and rape is a crime. It is against the law.
If someone rapes or sexually assaults you, that person has broken the law.
They can go to prison.
You can tell the police you have been sexually assaulted or raped.
You can tell them who did it.
You can tell them about what happened to you, even if you do not know who did it.
The police will help you get the support you need.

Rape Crisis Scotland can help you if you have been raped or sexually assaulted.
They have a support service call the STAR project.
STAR gives confidential support to young people 12 to 18 who live in Edinburgh, East, West or Midlothian.
